O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. Her vocal performance impressed the jury, and she was voted into the final 100th stage. O'Neil was given high marks by the panel of judges. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, and then second place. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performance since then, always finished in the three top performers. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was declared by the Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
